The Community Garden, located at the corner of Beechwood and Brookwillow Avenues, is a membership garden where individuals and families \u201crent\u201d a plot for the growing season (April \u2013 October) for $30 to grow their own vegetables and flowers. These local gardeners \u2013 and several organizations \u2013 Providing Hope and Shore House \u2013 then take responsibility to help upkeep our community plots, from which the vegetable harvests are donated to a number of community agencies. This year, harvest donations were provided to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long Branch Senior Center <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good Samaritan Food Bank, Freehold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ronald McDonald House, Long Branch <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Center, Asbury Park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soup D\u2019Shore at St. Luke\u2019s Methodist Church <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lutheran Reformation Church Food Pantry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St. Brigid\u2019s Food Pantry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-2fzv5\">We provide you with an illustration of how the 3,576.50 lbs of donated organic produce breaks down and what its cash value represents to the community. Prices used are the average price per vegetable from local markets (total cash value of the donated harvests was $6,706.52).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tomatoes \u2013 821 pounds harvested ($1,633.79) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lettuce: 44 pounds harvested ($87.56)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peppers \u2013 783 pounds harvested ($1,558.17) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watermelon \u2013 56 pounds harvested ($223.44)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eggplant \u2013 725 pounds harvested ($1,422.75) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basil &amp; other herbs \u2013 44 pounds harvested ($175.12)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beans \u2013 358 pounds harvested ($533.42) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carrots \u2013 30 pounds harvested ($38.70)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cucumbers \u2013 227 pounds harvested ($224.73) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peas \u2013 17 pounds harvested ($34.00)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Onions \u2013 51 pounds harvested ($101.49) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spinach \u2013 12.5 pounds harvested ($18.62)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Squash \u2013 188 pounds harvested ($280.12) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kale \u2013 9 pounds harvested ($17.91)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swiss Chard \u2013 75 pounds harvested ($126.75) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collards \u2013 9 pounds harvested ($35.82)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strawberries \u2013 7 pounds harvested represents $34.93<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-g6o1d\">The Community Garden thanks all our gardeners, our volunteers, our Freshman Seminar students from the \u201cPlaying in the Dirt\u201d class, and the sorority sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha for all their work during this very successful 2013-2014 growing season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-q3jkb\">For more information on the Monmouth University Community Garden, or to become a member of the garden, please go to our website: www.monmouth.edu\/communitygarden<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Monmouth University Community Garden is pleased to announce that this year\u2019s donated harvest results have surpassed all previous donations.
