Bureau\/Division Overview<\/p>\n
The Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB) is comprised of experienced investigators, attorneys, and support personnel that investigate violations of the Commonwealth\u2019s tax laws. On tobacco-related investigations, the CIB works closely with the Illegal Tobacco Task Force and with civil tobacco inspectors from the Department\u2019s Miscellaneous Excise Bureau. The mission of CIB is to preserve the integrity of the Commonwealth\u2019s tax system by investigating and seeking prosecution of tax-related crimes that will generate the maximum deterrent effect, enhance voluntary compliance, and promote public confidence in the tax system.<\/p>\n
Position Summary<\/p>\n
The Department seeks an Investigative Intern for its Criminal Investigations Bureau. The intern will assist Tax Fraud Investigators and other CIB personnel with investigations. This is a great opportunity to obtain hands-on investigative experience while also learning various facets of state tax law including, but not limited to: tax evasion, money laundering, and tobacco smuggling. The chance to assist with tobacco inspections in the field is also a possibility based on experience, interest, and availability. The Bureau works in a hybrid model (part remote and part in-office in Boston).<\/p>\n
Core Responsibilities<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Performing investigative research.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Reviewing surveillance video.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Conducting data analysis of financial records.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Preparing reports of investigation or assisting with the drafting of affidavits.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Observing legal proceedings for criminal or civil cases.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Assisting in the inspection of tobacco licensees.<\/p>\n
Preferred Qualifications<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Interest in intelligence analysis and criminal or financial investigations.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 The ability to prioritize, adapt, and respond to a wide range of investigative assignments.<\/p>\n
