Probation Officer – Job Description
Department: Probation and Court Services
Division: Adult
Closing Date: Until Filled
Work Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. You must also work one or two evenings each week to meet with clients.
Salary: $56,000

Job Summary
Probation Officers work with people the court has placed on probation. Your job is to help them follow the rules, stay out of trouble, and make positive changes in their lives.
Job Duties
You will:
- Create and manage a supervision plan for each client.
- Help clients stay motivated to change their behavior.
- Work with families, community groups, and treatment programs.
- Encourage good behavior using rewards and sanctions.
- Support clients when working with employers, family, or the court.
- Visit clients’ homes and other locations to check safety and living conditions.
- Provide counseling and help during crises.
- Keep track of court requirements and report progress to the court.
- Testify in court when needed.
- Work as part of a team, including with people convicted of serious offenses.
- Do other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science (Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Sociology).
- Two years of experience in probation, counseling, social work, or human services (preferred).
- Completion of the AOIC application and placement on the AOIC Certified List before hiring.
- Good decision‑making skills.
- Strong organization and time‑management skills.
- Willingness to use community resources to reduce reoffending.
- Basic knowledge of laws and court rules.
- Ability to work well with the public and with people facing emotional or behavioral challenges.
- Skill in observing and recording behavior.
- Ability to meet physical demands, conduct home visits, and a valid driver’s license.
