Describe your role or a typical day.
Interning at Stryker was an amazing opportunity to take my first steps into the corporate world. In my role as a Consultant Management Team intern, I was able to communicate with both Trauma and Joint replacement surgeons. I was responsible for the auditing of expense reports and events that the surgeons took part in. Throughout the day I was also involved in team meetings, conference calls, and company events. The internship program at Stryker also highly encouraged networking, this allowed me to meet with employees in other departments such as Marketing, Research and Development, and Finance.

How did you hear about or obtain this role?
I originally heard about the role directly from a Monmouth University email. The email stated that Stryker would be on campus for open interviews and I immediately sent in my resume. I had already done my research on the company and had known what a great company they were. I was thrilled they would be coming on campus and prepared myself by meeting with Career Development. From there I interviewed on campus, followed by a personality phone interview, ending with interviews at the Mahwah office.

What were your major responsibilities at the internship?
During my internship, apart from the daily tasks I had assigned, I was also given an overarching project to find a process improvement for the team. Essentially, coming in as an intern you are a fresh set of eyes. In an established company such as Stryker, they look to the new interns and pose the challenge of finding a process improvement which they will in the end present to senior leadership and management. I was able to present my process improvement to the team, leadership, those who I was able to network with and my fellow interns at the end of my experience at Stryker.

What interested you about it?
Originally what interested me about the role was the need to have great communication skills and be personable while having a business knowledge background. I immediately felt the role was for me, I excel in being able to present information well to others and help build and maintain relationships which I was able to do in this role.

What did you learn through your experience? How can you relate this to your future career goals?
Through my experience at Stryker I was able to learn to be confident in my abilities. Being put into a corporate environment for the first time was intimidating. At first, I struggled with feeling comfortable voicing my opinions being that I was an intern. But, my team members encouraged and allowed me to gain confidence by giving me assignments and projects to present to the team.

I can relate this to my future career goals by understanding to always believe in yourself. You attain a role for a reason, and with that opportunity you should feel comfortable in exploring your talents and showing how hard you can work. Stryker taught me this.

What advice would you give to other students about the internship experience?
My advice for other students about the internship experience is to always start early! We go to college to prepare ourselves for the outside world but the classroom can’t always give you work experience. An internship gives a real understanding of not only how a company works but how you mesh with the work you are doing. My biggest emphasis is for those who don’t know what they want to do after graduation. An internship isn’t only to figure out what you want to do but also what you do not want to do, and that can’t be gained without going out and finding internship experience.
