{"id":7353,"date":"2025-09-04T13:58:52","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T17:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/b+m\/?page_id=7353"},"modified":"2026-04-07T12:57:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T16:57:26","slug":"slp42","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/b+m\/slp42\/","title":{"rendered":"4+2 Bachelor&#8217;s to Master&#8217;s in Speech-Language Pathology Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content-wrapped is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading headline\" id=\"42-bachelors-to-masters-in-speechlanguage-pathology-program\">4+2 Bachelor&#8217;s to Master&#8217;s in Speech-Language Pathology Program<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Monmouth University has created six unique pathways for incoming first-year students starting in Fall 2026 to move seamlessly from their bachelor\u2019s degree program in one of the following majors, <strong>Anthropology, English, Early Childhood Education, Music, Sociology, or Spanish<\/strong>, to Monmouth University\u2019s competitive master\u2019s degree program in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/graduate\/speech-language-pathology-msed\/\"><strong>Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/a>. During your undergraduate study, you will also pursue an 19-credit <strong>minor in communication sciences and disorders<\/strong>, including concepts such as language development, phonetics, and anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this 4+2 direct-entry program, incoming first-year students will be required to follow a set sequence of courses and meet all progression benchmarks prior to advancing to graduate study. Speech-Language Pathology coursework begins in the summer, shortly after Undergraduate Commencement.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pathway-options\"><strong>Pathway Options<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list combonations is-style-two-column\">\n<li><strong>B.A. in Anthropology<\/strong> <strong>to M.S.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B.A. in English<\/strong> <strong>to M.S.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B.A. in Early Childhood Education<\/strong> <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>M.S.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B.A. in Music<\/strong> <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>M.S.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B.A. in Sociology<\/strong> <strong>to M.S.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B.A. in Spanish<\/strong> <strong>to M.S.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Suggested 4+2 course sequence charts will be posted to this page in the fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Current Monmouth University students interested in being considered for a 4+2 SLP pathway must <a href=\"https:\/\/apply.monmouth.edu\/register\/?id=e4722ce8-a972-408c-902e-37e825b0fb18\">apply to the Bachelor\u2019s + Master\u2019s program<\/a> prior to the completion of 90 undergraduate credits. Should admission be granted, all progression benchmarks must be met prior to advancing to graduate study.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mu-accordion\"><details><summary><span class=\"acc-header\">To Apply<\/span> <\/summary><div class=\"int-wrapper\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select the 4+2 program option of your choice on the Common Application or Monmouth University Application when you apply to Monmouth University.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications are due by <strong>December 1<\/strong> and must contain a personal statement detailing interest in the program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicants to the <strong>Speech-Language Pathology 4+2 programs are required to submit an oral presentation (audio recording, 1-2 minutes)<\/strong> on empathy and clinical practice in Speech-Language Pathology. Empathy and compassion are critical components of effective communication and therapeutic relationships. Empathy is our understanding of others&#8217; feelings, while compassion is our reaction to this understanding. Both empathy and compassion affect how we, as professionals, develop and practice many of our core skills. Some core skills required by speech-language pathologists include rapport building, active listening, interprofessional practice, and cultural competence, just to name a few.&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discuss how your own empathy and compassion will affect your clinical practice as a future speech-language pathologist. In your answer, be sure to reflect on the importance of empathy and compassion in the field of speech-language pathology.<br>Your oral presentation (audio recording) can be uploaded to your applicant portal at a future date. At the start of the student\u2019s final undergraduate year at Monmouth (year 4), students will submit a Graduate Cohort Application for evaluation; the Graduate Studies application fee will be waived for students in the 4+2 program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To continue on to the Monmouth\u2019s SLP program, students must successfully meet all undergraduate degree requirements, as well as the following standards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bachelor\u2019s Degree<\/strong>: All applicants must possess a bachelor\u2019s degree from Monmouth University by May of their 4th year if enrolled in the 4+2 track.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong>: Successfully complete 19 credits of prerequisite coursework in Speech-Language Pathology via the Communication Sciences and Disorders Minor with a minor GPA of at least 3.0. Applicants must also successfully complete the following prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better: statistics, biology related to humans\/animals, physics OR chemistry, and social\/behavioral sciences (4 separate courses) to meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/certification\/2020-slp-certification-standards\/#4:~:text=IV%3A%20Knowledge%20Outcomes-,Standard%20IV%2DA,-The%20applicant%20must\">American Speech-Language-Hearing Association\u2019s (ASHA) Certification Standard IV-A<\/a>. It is required that students complete these courses before June 15 of the year of\u00a0 enrollment in the graduate program. For more information about this coursework visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/certification\/course-content-areas-for-slp-standards\/\">asha.org<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Professional Skills Demonstration<\/strong>: Successful completion (minimum grade of 80%) on each professional skills assignment embedded into SLP 201, SLP 302, and SLP 401. These include professional skills in written and oral communication as well as application of the concepts of empathy, integrity, and ethics to discipline-focused content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grade Point Average<\/strong>: Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in SLP-specific (CSD minor) prerequisite courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Graduate Studies application fee <\/strong>will be waived for students in the 4+2 program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Essential Skills and Standards:<\/strong> Completion of the required<strong> <\/strong>Essential Skills and Standards Acknowledgement Form which will be provided once your application is received.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resumes: <\/strong>A professional resume is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mu-accordion\"><details><summary><span class=\"acc-header\">Important Financial Aid Notes<\/span> <\/summary><div class=\"int-wrapper\">\n<p>We encourage you to contact the Financial Office with any questions you may have. All undergraduate awards&nbsp;<strong>will not continue<\/strong>&nbsp;once you enter your graduate program.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Financial aid for graduate students is different, and we encourage you to work directly with the Financial Aid Office to plan for financing your graduate education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Summer financial aid is available via a separate application process.&nbsp; Typically the aid available during the summer is limited to loans, both federal and private, but each student\u2019s financial aid eligibility is different and you are encouraged to consult with the Financial Aid Office to develop a plan based on your individual circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>During the graduate portion of your program, you will be billed at the graduate tuition rate in effect at the time you are enrolled in graduate coursework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mu-accordion\"><details><summary><span class=\"acc-header\">Housing Information<\/span> <\/summary><div class=\"int-wrapper\">\n<p>Students interested in residing on-campus while enrolled in summer coursework will be housed in a double room with kitchen access. Accommodations will also include a shared living space and bathroom. The cost of summer housing adjusts from year to year.
