Studio Experience @ Monmouth

The faculty of the Department of Art and Design at Monmouth University is a community of professional artists and designers who have developed an innovative curriculum. Programs create unique learning experiences in animation, graphic and interactive design, interactive media, and photography as well as in visual aesthetics and traditional studio art.

Monmouth University’s Department of Art and Design is committed to educating students who seek a strong and challenging studio experience within an intimate learning environment. We believe in providing educational opportunities beyond the classroom and require all of our students to complete an off-site internship as one of their requirements towards graduation. These internships often lead directly to jobs.

The curriculum responds to contemporary needs within the visual communication field by offering a competitive B.F.A. degree with concentrations in Animation as well as Graphic and Interactive Design. The B.F.A. with a concentration in Animation explores all aspects of storyboarding, sequencing, 3D model development, rendering, animation, and sound.

Our studio-based B.A. degrees are designed for students who want a strong and expansive studio experience in the visual arts. The B.A. in Art with a concentration in Photography is a focused course of study in the aesthetic and technical aspects of fine and applied photographic practice and covers an array of digital and film-based skills. The B.A. in Art encompasses traditional courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. Students also have the option for advanced focus in a specific area of interest by completing up to 12 credits of independent study.

For students training to become teachers, we offer the B.A. in Art and Education with Endorsement in Elementary Education or with Endorsement in K-12 Education in Art. Students who follow this course of study complete a range of traditional studio art courses while completing their School of Education course requirements.

All of the majors include instruction in art history, which enriches the program experience. The Department also offers specialized minors in art history, graphic design/computer graphics, interactive media, and photography.
