CAPPADONA LEADS MONMOUTH TO PRE-SEASON VICTORY
Hawks Down In-Flight, 72-52
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Sophmore forward MICHELLE CAPPADONA (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) scored a team-high 17 points, including 11-of-12 from the free throw line as the Monmouth University women's basketball team posted a 72-52 exhibition game victory over In-Flight at Boylan Gymnasium this evening.
Junior guard AMANDA ROSATO (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) added 11 points and freshman MEREDITH THORNTON (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School) had 10 as the Hawks used an early 16-4 run en route to the victory. The game was played in four 10-minute periods as opposed to the NCAA regulation two 20-minute halves.
The Hawks trailed 4-3 with 8:29 to play in the opening period, but KRISTIN GARTNER (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) put Monmouth in front with two consecutive jumpers. After In-Flights' TONI BATTLE scored on a layup, senior guard AUDREY TAYLOR (South River, NJ/South River) connected on a three pointer and Rosato sank a layup for a 12-6 advantage with 3:31 left in the quarter. Battle sank another layup to make the score 12-8, however the Hawks closed out the stanza with seven consecutive points -- three from Rosato, two foul shots by Cappadona and a layup by Thornton for a 19-8 lead.
Freshman CLAIRE DUNSMORE (Adelaide, Australia/Aberfoyle Park) gave the Hawks their largest lead of the first half at 31-16 with a jumper, but In-Flight would close the gap to seven before the half as BECKY HARDEN scored six of game-high 18 points. A jumper by JENEE TYSON made the score 33-29 in the third period, but the Hawks would score 11 of the next 15 points in the game with Cappadona accounting for four points, all from the free throw line during that stretch as the MU lead expanded its advantage to 44-33 with 2:11 to play in the qaurter.
Cappadona added nine rebounds while Gartner had seven points, five rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots. Taylor, a member of the NEC All-Tournament Team last year, collected nine points and four steals. Monmouth held the advantage on the boards, 49-44 and made 20-of-24 attempts at the free throw line.
The Hawks, who reached the Northeast
Conference championship game last year, opens it 1999-2000 season on Friday,
November 19th at Delaware.
