Entering his sixth season at the helm of Monmouth University men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs, Joe Compagni is becoming one of the more recognizable coaching names in the East.
In his first five seasons, Compagni has earned Northeast Conference Coach of the Year honors on four occasions. He earned the league’s men’s outdoor track and field honor in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and garnered award for women’s outdoor track and field in 2000.

Since taking over the reigns in 1995, Compagni has turned a small collegiate team into perhaps the top program in the NEC and an up-and-coming force on the East Coast. During his tenure, the Hawks squad has tripled in size and the list of accomplishments keeps growing.

The women’s outdoor track and field team, which had not finished higher than fourth place since 1994, captured the team title in 2000. Compagni also guided the men’s outdoor track and field team to titles in 1998 and 1999.

In the last five years, Monmouth athletes have set new school records in indoor and outdoor track and field on 268 occasions, including 60 times during the 1999-2000 season. The improvement is obvious. In the five years prior to Compagni’s arrival the women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams claimed just six individual conference titles. Since 1996, the program has 16 individual NEC crowns. During the same time frame, the men have won 29 individual league titles after winning just nine from 1991 to 1995.

He has coached 23 athletes to All-East honors and has coached competitors at the U.S. National Cross Country  Championships, U.S. National Track and Field Championships, U.S. National Junior Track and Field Championships and the Canadian Olympic Trials.

Compagni currently serves on the NEC Games and Seeding Advisory Committee and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll Committee.

Prior to his arrival at Monmouth, Compagni spent four years at California University of Pennsylvania serving as the head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach. In his final year at Cal, he guided the Vulcans to a 50-9 overall record including winning four straight meets.

A 1987 graduate of the University of Delaware, Compagni letter in both cross country and track and served as the Blue Hens’ cross country captain as a senior.

Compagni, who worked with cyclists and runners at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, received his master’s degree in communication from Cornell in 1990. While at Cornell, he ran for the High Noon Athletic Club.

Compagni and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Highlands with their daughter Gabriela who turns one in December 2000.
