THREE HAWKS HONORED BY NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
Dargene, Kalnas and Lucas named Athletes of the Week
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Three Monmouth University athletes were recognized on Tuesday as the Northeast Conference released named Nick Dargene, Jon Kalnas and Jaclyn Lucas among its athletes of the week for Golf, Tennis and Track & Field.
Nick Dargene (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Guilford) was tabbed the Northeast Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. Dargene was one of Monmouth’s catalyst in Monmouth’s 3-0 week in men’s tennis. Dargene won all three of his No. 3 singles matches. In the Hawks’ triumph over NEC rival Wagner, Dargene stopped James Cardazzone, 6-0, 6-2. He also emerged victorious against Rider’s Frank Ruggiero, 7-5, 6-2 and took out Iona’s Frank Russo in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. Dargene became the second Monmouth men’s tennis player to earn the award this school year, joining Chad Long who was recognized last October.
Jon Kalnas (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) earned Northeast Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this year. Kalnas was recognized for his performance at the talent-laden Duke Invitational last weekend in Durham, North Carolina. At the event, Kalnas was victorious in the shot put with a heave of 57’ 8 ¼”. It marked the third consecutive weekend that he was victorious in the shot put. Kalnas also placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 157’ 7”. Kalnas also earned the award twice during the indoor season.
Jaclyn Lucas (Ashton, Pa./Sun Valley) was dubbed the Northeast Conference Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week. Lucas took home the award after finishing in second place at the Bucknell Invitational last weekend. Lucas shot 153 for the tournament, carding a 77 in the opening round and a 76 on day two. Lucas looks to be a legitimate contender for individual honors at the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament in Cresson, Pennsylvania. Lucas became the first Monmouth women’s golfer to earn NEC Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Also recognized by the Northeast Conference were Cleopatra Borel of
UMBC in women’s outdoor track and field, Ana Laura Duran of Fairleigh Dickinson
in women’s tennis and Matt Steinback of Central Connecticut State in men’s
golf.
