MONMOUTH MEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS IONA
Hawks tally second consecutive victory

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s men’s tennis team posted a 4-3 victory over Iona College Saturday afternoon at the MU Tennis Complex in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

Monmouth fell behind early in the contest as Iona earned the doubles point 2-1. Monmouth’s lone doubles victory came in the No. 2 spot as Chad Long and Stephen Barlow defeated Iona’s Bobby Kropp and C.J. Falco 8-6. The Gaels were victorious 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

The squads split the first to singles matches as Monmouth’s Ali Gilak defeated Kropp, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Iona’s Teran Gaylord defeated Michael Miller, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to give Iona a 2-1 edge.

The Hawks would soon gain the lead as Andrew Katz defeated Falco 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Chris Doyle was triumphant over Joe Fetterly 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to give Monmouth a 3-2 lead.Iona tied the match as Cesar Andrede was victorous over Long at No. 1 singles 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.

The Hawks won the decisive match as Nick Dargene bested Frank Russo 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.

With the victory, Monmouth improved to 7-7 on the season.

Monmouth returns to action on Monday as the Hawks host Rider University for a 3 p.m, contest.
