HAWKS’ COMEBACK FALLS SHORT, LOSE TO CCSU 3-2
West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth University Hawks closed out their regular season home schedule this afternoon in men’s collegiate soccer action on the Great Lawn, falling to Central Connecticut State 3-2. The loss drops Monmouth’s record to 3-12-1, and 1-6-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Central Connecticut posted three goals in the first half, scoring the first in the 13th minute. William Boulton tallied the first of his two goals on the day, as he struck a pass from Krzystof Korczak past the Monmouth netminder Ryan Weid (Turnersville, N.J./Bishop Eustace). Boulton then scored again in the 21st minute on a pass from Gareth Wilkinson. The Blue Devils closed out the first half with a goal by Rohan Smith, assisted by Renson Haynes, in the 34th minute.
Monmouth cut the lead to 3-1 at 56:40 as JD Scaggs (Olney, Md./Sherwood) capitalized on an assist from Mike Hull (Pine Beach, N.J./Monsignor Donovan). The Hawks kept the momentum rolling when Joe Sellitto (Raritan, N.J./Raritan) deposited a ball from Hull in the back of the net, past backup CCSU goalie, Kevin Gonzalez. Despite numerous chances for each squad, the score remained 3-2 through regulation.
The Hawks and Blue Devils each launched 18 shots, forcing Weid to make nine saves. Jeff Brunetti, the starting CCSU goalie, made five saves, while Gonzalez made one.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Francis
(N.Y.) to take on the Terriers in a 7 p.m. match.
