MONMOUTH MEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO RED FLASH

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University dropped a 2-0 decision to St. Francis (Pa.) University Sunday afternoon in men’s collegiate soccer action in Loretto, Pa.

It was the Red Flash's first-ever victory over the Hawks in 14 games between the two schools.

Freshman Bernie Showers put St. Francis (3-6-2, 2-2-1 NEC) on the board in the match's 30th minute, taking a pass from freshman Joaquin Justiniano on the right side before beating Monmouth goalkeeper Frank Gullace to post SFU to a 1-0 advantage.

Showers second goal would come with under two minutes to play in the first half.  The rookie took a pass from junior Mike Giardetti and dribbled through the Hawks defense before getting the ball past Gullace to extend the Red Flash lead to 2-0.

St. Francis outshot the Hawks, 17-16, and owned a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.  Red Flash junior goalkeeper Joe Alianiello recorded the shutout, making seven saves.

Monmouth (3-8-0, 1-4-0 NEC) returns to action on Wednesday evening as the Hawks travel to New Brunswick, N.J., for a match vs. Rutgers University.
