HAWKS FALL AT DELAWARE, 5-2
NEWARK, DE-- Brian Shepanski scored two goals as the University of Delaware defeated Monmouth University, 5-2 in men’s soccer action Wednesday night at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Delaware’s five goals were its most scored in a game since it scored six in a 6-0 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in 1993, a span of 149 games. The Blue Hens’ win improves their season record to 3-3 as the Hens have won back-to-back games for the first time since 1999.
Shepanski, a senior from Glen Mills, PA (Garnet Valley), started the scoring four minutes into play, taking a Mike Honeysett pass and kicking it past Hawks' goalie, Mike Erskine (Holmdel, N.J./Homdel). Six minutes later Eric Carlson scored his second goal of the season off a Dan Keane crossing pass.
The Hens scored their third straight goal when Honeysett then scored off an Adam Flanigan corner kick at 14:04. Monmouth added their first score in the 26th minute as Joe Sellitto (Raritan, N.J./Raritan) pounded in a rebound off of the Delaware goalie from a Nick Randazzo (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland) shot. Five minutes later, Shepanski put in his second score, taking the rebound shot off Keane’s shot off the post. The Delaware five-goal first half conmenced with a Jeff Skinner goal, assisted by a Stephan Mangat cross.
The Hawks’ back-up goalie, Frank Gullace (Brick, N.J./St. Rose), shutdown the Delaware offfense in the second half, recording three saves. Anthony Viscariello (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton Prep) scored the final goal for Monmouth, with an assist from NEC Player of the Week, Craig Lindquist (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
Blue Hen freshman goalie Kyle Haynes (St. Michael’s, MD/ St. Michael’s) stopped five shots to record his third win of the season.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, September 30 as they host NEC-rival
Fairleigh Dickinson University in a 2:30 p.m. match on the MU Great Lawn.
