HAWKS SHUT OUT 4-0 BY UMBC IN NEC OPENER

West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth University Hawks men’s soccer team opened Northeast Conference action this afternoon hosting the Retrievers of UMBC and falling by the score of 4-0.  The Hawks were out shot in the contest by a 22 to eight margin, forcing Monmouth goalkeeper, Mike Erskine (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) to make nine saves.

The Retrievers opened the scoring in the 24th minute as Andy Wells (Essex, England/The Sweyne School) received a cross from James Hamilton (W. Yorkshire, England/Hipperholme & Lightcliffe) and netted the shot inside the far post.  Ricky Brown (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) then received another Hamilton pass and scored in the 44th minute.

UMBC out shot the Hawks 14 to five in the first stanza, resulting in the 2-0 halftime lead.

UMBC was able to post two more tallies in the second half as Derek McElligott (Baltimore, Md./Greater Grace Christian Academy) and Alex Wilmot (Washington DC/The Bullis School) scored eight minutes apart to put the game away.

Brian Rowland (Toronto, Ontario/York Memorial) played the first 70 minutes in goal for the Retrievers, making two saves.  Tom Wunk (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) entered the game in the 70th minute to preserve the shut out, making a save himself.

With the loss, Monmouth’s record drops to 2-4-0, 0-1 in the NEC.  UMBC improves its record to 4-1-1, 1-0 in the conference.

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, September 23 at 2:30 p.m. as they host Mouth St. Mary’s.
