MONMOUTH WINS ON LATE GOAL, TOPS BUCKNELL
West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth Hawks, after taking a 2-0 lead into the half, needed a goal by Craig Lindquist (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) in the 68th minute to reclaim the lead, and earn a victory in West Long Branch. The Hawks got goals from freshman Nick Randazzo (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional) and sophomore Joe Sellitto (Raritan, N.J./Raritan) in the first half to take the advantage. Both goals were assisted by Mike Hull (Pine Beach, N.J./Monsignor Donovan).
Bucknell, who was outshot by Monmouth nine to five in the first stanza, came out of halftime pushing forward. The Bison connected on goals by Nick Taylor and Nathan Hopfinger, four minutes and seven minutes into the half. The two tallies were assisted by Elliot Maruffi-Cowley.
Lindquist was able to put the Hawks back in control as he connected on a direct kick from just outside the “18”, passed diving Bucknell netminder, Steve Whitaker.
Mike Erskine (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) was able to preserve the victory for Monmouth as he made a pivotal save in 77th minute. Erskine made two saves on the afternoon, despite facing 12 Bucknell shots.
The win improves Monmouth’s record to 2-3 and Bucknell falls to 1-3.
The Hawks open NEC action on Friday as they host UMBC in a 1 p.m. contest
in West Long Branch.
