HAWKS EARN VICTORY OVER IONA IN MEN’S SOCCER
West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth University Hawks men’s soccer team posted its first win of the 2001 season by defeating the Iona College Gaels 3-1, at the Great Lawn this afternoon. Monmouth was led by Craig Lindquist (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), who had a goal and an assist.
The Hawks took the lead in the 8th minute as Lindquist headed in a direct kick pass from Joe Sellitto (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan). The score stood 1-0 in favor of the Hawks at the half.
The Gaels were able to knot the score in the 77th minute as Paul Nobile broke in on Monmouth goalkeeper Mike Erskine (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and netted the ball. Erskine faced 14 shots on the afternoon, making seven saves.
Monmouth regained the lead in the 89th minute of the contest as Anthony Viscariello (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton Prep) connected on a cross from Mike Parshelunis (Brick, N.J./St. Rose). With three seconds remaining, the Hawks posted their third goal as Frank Loconte (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) scored on a cross from Lindquist.
The Hawks were outshot in the game 14-13, and the Iona goalkeepers combined for four saves. Starting keeper, Robert Dolle, who allowed the first goal, was lifted in favor of Patrick McAllen at the half. McAllen faced six shots, making one save.
The victory improves Monmouth’s record to 1-2, and drops Iona to 0-3. The Hawks travel to Princeton University to take on the Tigers, on Saturday, September 8, at 7:30 p.m.
