MONMOUTH WINS NEC REGULAR SEASON TITLE
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University won the Northeast Conference women’s lacrosse regular-season title as the Hawks defeated Sacred Heart, 12-3, Sunday afternoon in Fairfield, Connecticut.
The Hawks (9-6, 6-0 Northeast Conference) earned the No. 1 seed in the four-team NEC Tournament to be hosted by Monmouth on May 3-5 at Kessler Field. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Monmouth took control of the contest early as Meg Brown tallied the opening goal 50 seconds into the contest. Jess Salvesen added a goal with 27:34 remaining in the first half and Stacy Sydlo tallied a goal to give Monmouth a 3-0 lead 5:30 into the contest as the Hawks cruised to the victory.
Brown led Monmouth’s attack with three goals. Salvesen and Sydlo each scored two goals for the Hawks. All-American Heather Bryan booked one goal and two assists. Christine Franzen, Stephenie LaGrossa, Laura Levins and Erin Reilley chipped in with one goal apiece.
In goal, Stacy Makris earned the victory as she played the first 50 minutes. Makris made five saves while allowing just two goals.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday as they trek back to Connecticut
for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Fairfield University.
