HAWKS COAST TO VICTORY OVER MOUNT ST. MARY’S
Monmouth moves to 2-0 in Northeast Conference play
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University posted a 7-2 halftime lead and coasted to an 8-5 victory over Mount St. Mary’s College in Northeast Conference lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Kessler Field in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
Monmouth (5-5, 2-0 NEC) remained in first place in the league with the victory.
Mount St. Mary’s (2-10, 0-2 NEC) drew first blood in the contest as Kelly Moran scored an unassisted goal 2:06 into the contest.
It would not take long for the Hawks to tally an equalizer as Heather Bryan scored less than 30 seconds later to tie the contest at 1-1. Bryan played a part in two of the next three goals as Monmouth built a 4-1 edge. She lofted a perfect pass to Rebekah Murphy who whizzed the ball past the Mountaineers goaltender at the 19:37 mark. Stephanie LaGrossa bounced in a free possession goal at the 17:52 mark and Bryan scored an unassisted goal with16:36 remaining in the first half to push the cushion to three goals.
Moran scored on an assist from Ashley Rusk to cut the Hawks’ lead to 4-2 with 13:06, but a pair of goals by Stacy Sydlo and a free possession goal by LaGrossa gave the Hawks a 7-2 edge at the intermission.
Coming out of halftime, Mount St. Mary’s slowly trimmed the lead down to three goals as Amy Harris lit the lamp with 25:17 remaining and Rusk scored on an assist from Erin Gargan to close the gap to 7-4.
Meg Brown added an insurance goal for the Hawks with 5:06 remaining to put the game out of reach.
Stacy Makris earned the victory in goal for the Hawks as she played all 60 minutes. She tallied six saves on the afternoon.
Mount St. Mary’s Kathryn Harrington made eight saves for the Mountaineers.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, April 11 as the Hawks travel to New Britain, Conn., for a 3 p.m. contest at Central Connecticut State.
