MONMOUTH NAMES BOYCE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University football squad filled its offensive coordinator vacancy as the Hawks tabbed Greg Boyce to the position head football coach Kevin Callahan announced on Wednesday.
In addition to his role as offensive coordinator, Boyce will also mentor Monmouth’s offensive line. Boyce fills the void left when Rich Skrosky, who had been with the Hawks since Monmouth began its football program in 1993, accepted a position as offensive line coach at Columbia University.
Boyce comes to Monmouth from Jacksonville (Fla.) University where he served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the 1999 and 2000 seasons under head coach Steve Gilbert.
Boyce, a native of Biglersville, Pennsylvania, also possesses offensive coordinator experience from his three-year stint at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. While at Shepherd, he served as the offensive coordinator during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. The Rams compiled a 19-3 record during his two years as offensive coordinator, including to back-to-back West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and an appearance in the 1998 NCAA Division II Playoff Quarterfinals.
Shepherd's rushing offense, which ranked 17th in NCAA Division II in 1998, averaged 234 yards per game as running back Damian Beane rushed for 2,056 yards and finished fourth in the voting for the Harland Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year.
In 1997, Boyce helped the Ram offense to one of its most productive seasons in school history. Shepherd finished 10th in the nation in total offense (421.3), 13th in scoring (34.0), 18th in rushing (232.7), and 38th in passing (188.6). The 340 points scored are the most in school history.
Boyce began his tenure at Shepherd as the offensive line coach in 1996. His impact on the Shepherd offense was immediate in 1996, as for the first time in school history, the Rams averaged over 200 yards rushing and passing. Shepherd was one of just five teams in the nation to accomplish the feat in 1996. Shepherd finished the 1996 season 17th in the nation in total offense (418.7), 30th in rushing (204.2), 31st in passing (214.8), and 31st in scoring (30.2).
Prior to his stint at Shepherd, Boyce spent two years as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at the University of Maryland, where he coached NFL tackle Steve Ingram.
Boyce also spent one year (1993) as an offensive line/tight end coach at West Liberty (W.Va.) State College and two years (1991-92) as an offensive line coach at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. Boyce helped lead RMC to the 1991 Frontier Conference title. In addition, his unit led the way for Steve Thompson to rush for an NAIA-II-record 405 yards and six touchdowns in a win over Carroll College in 1991.
During his collegiate playing career, Boyce was a four-year letter winner
and two-year starter at Kutztown University, where he earned a Bachelor
of Science degree in secondary education in 1990. Boyce earned a master's
degree in secondary education/social studies from Kutztown in 1996. Boyce
was a standout at Biglersville High School during his prep playing career.
