SENTIPAL EARNS NEC HONORS FOR THIRD TIME IN 2000
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University linebacker Joe Sentipal (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) earned Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors as the league announced its weekly award winners on Monday.
Sentipal became just the third player in NEC history to win defensive player of the week honors three times in one season. He tallied three sacks and five tackles for loss of yardage in Monmouth’s 27-14 thumping of St. John’s last Friday. Sentipal set the Monmouth single-season sack record with 12.5 on the season. He spearheaded a Hawks’ defense that tied the single-game school record with 11 sacks and allowed the Red Storm to gain just 104 yards of total offense.
Monmouth’s defense currently ranks first in the country among Division I-AA teams allowing just 234.8 yards per game. The Hawks also rank ninth in the country in scoring defense as Monmouth has yielded an average of just 14.6 points per game.
Monmouth closes out its 2000 campaign Saturday as the Hawks travel to
Florida for a 1 p.m. contest at the University of Jacksonville.
