West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth Hawks and Seton Hall Pirates combined for 29 runs, 32 hits, and 10 errors in a 3:45 minute game, which saw the Pirates come out on top, 17-12. Monmouth closed the gap to 10-9 in the fifth inning as they strung together three hits and three runs, with help of three Seton Hall errors. But Seton Hall put the game out of reach in the seventh inning as they scored seven runs on three hits and two errors.
The Hawks made an effort to close the game as they scored three in the eighth inning, but were unable to get any closer. Pinch hitter, Chuck Gookins, doubled in the first run of the inning and later scored on a Seton Hall error.
Chris Heycock came in to pitch the ninth inning for Monmouth, allowing
no runs or hits, while striking out two Pirate batters. The loss
puts Monmouth’s record at 21-19 on the season as they return to conference
play on Saturday with a double header against Sacred Heart University.
