PALMIERI, OFFENSE PROPEL HAWKS TO VICTORY

West Long Branch, N.J. – Andrew Palmieri threw eight innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out eight St. Peter’s batters, and the Monmouth offense posted 12 hits and 10 runs, en route to a 10-3 victory over St. Peter’s College.  Palmieri earned the win, improving his record to 2-0.  Doug Grant, the St. Peter’s starter, drops to 0-3.

St. Peter’s was able to put one run on the board in the first two innings, but trailed 7-2 as the Hawks had an answer.  Monmouth registered three runs in the first inning on two hits and two errors.  Greg Landis started things off by reaching first on an error and stealing second, his 32nd stolen base of the season.  Brian Gismonde then reached on a throwing error, which scored Landis and moved Gismonde to third.  Jay Law (2-5) drove in Gismonde with a ground out, followed by a single from Jeff Toth (2-4) and an RBI-single from Mike Kelly (2-4).

In the second, Monmouth got a one-out single from Ian Magley (2-4) and he came home on Landis’ triple.  Gismonde drove in Landis with a single, and scored in front of Law as he connected on his team-leading 11th home run of the season.

Palmieri settled in and retired the next seven batters he faced, but allowing no hits or runs until the seventh inning.  In the seventh, Micheal Quevedo led off with a single and advanced to third on an error by Law.  Ken Kopacz then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Quevedo from third.  The Hawks posted three runs in the bottom of the frame as Law and Toth each doubled to start.  Mike St. Martine drove a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Law.  Brian Marsh (2-4) added the last two Monmouth runs by blasting his first home run over the left field fence.

Brian Driber closed the game for the Hawks, throwing the ninth, allowing two hits, but no runs.

Monmouth improves their record with the win to 21-18, while St. Peter’s falls to 2-31.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Pirates of Seton Hall University.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
