MONMOUTH BATS PRODUCE 11 RUNS IN VICTORY
West Long Branch, N.J. – Monmouth starter Jim Carone (2-2) went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, and the Hawks got a multi-hit game from five players, including two home runs from Jay Law (3-5), en route to an 11-2 victory over Princeton University. The win, Monmouth’s sixth in a row, evens the Hawks’ record at 17-17, after starting the season 0-9.
Monmouth pounded out 17 hits on the afternoon, while posting four runs in the first inning. Greg Landis (3-4) led off with a single and came home on Law’s first home run. Jeff Toth followed suit with a home run of his own, his eighth of the season. The Hawks posted another run behind three more hits, including an RBI-single from Matt Clark.
Princeton produced a run behind two hits in the second, but fell behind 8-1 as Monmouth struck for four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Landis tripled and came home on Lance Koenig’s sacrifice fly. Law and Toth both singled, knocking out the Tiger starter Nick Pappas (0-1). Brian Biegen entered for Princeton and gave up a single to Paul Grasso (2-5) and a base-clearing double to Mike Kelly (3-4).
In the third, Landis created again by hitting a single and stealing second base. Koenig drove in Landis and touched home himself on Law’s second homer of the game and eighth of the season.
Carone, who held control throughout the game, gave up a solo home run in the sixth inning to Max Krance, his first of the year.
Mike Hoffman came in to relieve Carone in the eighth inning and retired all three batters, including an inning-ending strike out of Mickey Martin.
Brian Driber finished the game for the Hawks, working the ninth and retiring the side.
Monmouth travels to Fairleigh Dickinson University on Saturday to continue conference play, where they are 10-1. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
