MONMOUTH OFFENSE TRIGGERS 13-2 VICTORY
16 Hits, 6 Doubles Highlight Afternoon

West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth University Hawks’ offense led them to a 13-2 victory over UMBC in Northeast Conference action.  Enrique Genao went eight innings, allowing two runs on a scattered 10 hits to earn the win, improving his record to 4-1.  The win and series sweep of the Retrievers places Monmouth a-top the South Division with a 10-1 record.

UMBC used five pitchers in the game, starting Tony Watkins  (1-3) who got the loss.  The Retrievers, who scored in the first inning in all three games of the series, posted one run behind three singles.  Monmouth’s lead off hitter, Greg Landis (3-5) started off with a double and stole third, his 20th stolen base in as many attempts.  Landis was driven in by Lance Koenig’s (2-5) double, and scored on a Jeff Toth (2-3) sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1 at the end of one inning.

The Hawks scored three more runs in the second inning as Matt Clark (2-2) led off with a double and advanced to third on Ian Magley’s (2-4) single.  Clark was driven in by Landis’ second hit.  UMBC went to the bullpen, bringing in Chris Yetter. Who allowed two more Monmouth runs to score.

Monmouth posted another run in the third as Landis’ second double scored Clark from third.  UMBC was able to get a run back in the fourth, cutting the lead to 6-2, but Monmouth pushed across a run in the home fourth on two UMBC errors.

The Hawks broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring six runs on five hits, including a two-run single from Jay Law (2-5).

Tom Botwin took the mound in the ninth inning to close the game for Monmouth, retiring the side without allowing a hit.

The Hawks continue play on Tuesday, April 17th as they travel to Lafayette.  First pitch is 3:30 pm.
