JACKIE DeVANE
1st Season
Overall Record (113-157)
NEC Record (0-0)

Jackie DeVane enters her first season at the helm of the Monmouth University program. A 1983 graduate of Delaware State with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, DeVane went on to receive a master’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Penn State in 1987.  Shortly threreafter, she took the reins of the Cheyney State program, serving as head basketball and volleyball coach from 1987-‘92.  In five years at Cheyney, she compiled an overall record of 63-70 as a basketball coach and in 1989-’90 she led the Lady Wolves to their first 20-win season in nearly 10 years.  She was also an instructor in the school’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department, remaining at the school until 1994.

In 1995, DeVane returned to her alma mater Delaware State, coming home to a place where she achieved great successes academically and as a basketball player.  During her playing days, she was a four-year letterwinner and captain, leading Delaware State in rebounding three times.  Four times in her college career, she pulled down at least 20 rebounds, including a school record 28 in her freshman season.  She was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.

DeVane spent five years serving as both Head Coach and Senior Women’s Administrator.  The 1996 MEAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, DeVane led her first team to a 14-12 mark, the most wins by a DSU team since the 1990-’91 season. The 1995-’96 Hornets posted an 10-6 MEAC record, the school’s best since the 1985-’86 season.  In five seasons at her alma mater, DeVane posted an overall mark of 50-87, including an 11-17 campaign this past winter.

Outside of her coaching stops at Cheyney and Delaware State, DeVane has served as an instructor at Syracuse University basketball camps and at the John Chaney/Sonny Hill Basketball Camps in Philadelphia.  She is also active in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Black Coaches Association (BCA).

The newly appointed coach steps into somewhat of an ideal situation.  The Hawks return four starters and 13 letterwinners from a team which finished the 1999-’00 campaign with a 15-13 mark.  Monmouth had four Northeast ConferenceAll-Star selections, the most of any team.  Senior-to-be Amanda Rosato was an NEC Firs Team-Selection, junior-to-be Michelle Cappadona was the NEC’s Defensive Player of the Year as well as being selected to the All-Conference Second Team.  The team finished Northeast Conference play with an 11-7 mark, winning seven conference games in a row midway through the season.

Monmouth is an NCAA Division I School located in West Long Branch, New Jersey.  The school has an overall enrollment of 5,369 and is a member of the 12-team Northeast Conference.
