MONMOUTH FALLS TO SACRED HEART IN DOUBLE OT

West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth University field hockey team played its final home game of the 2001 season, hosting Sacred Heart University in Northeast Conference action Saturday afternoon at the MU Field Hockey Park.  The Pioneers’ Allison Enderly scored the game-winning goal with 5:38 remaining in the second overtime to lift Sacred Heart to the key league win.

Monmouth (8-8, 7-5 NEC) jumped out to the early advantage as Kelly Monahan (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) scored a goal just eight minutes into the contest.  Eleven minutes later Sacred Heart tied the match as reserve forward Christine Bobe capitalized on a pass from Enderly with 16:10 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Pioneers were able to grab the lead going into the half as Laura Athans tallied a score with 2 seconds remaining on the clock.  Athans’ goal was assisted by Michelle Bruckner.

Monmouth was able to knot the score again with 15:36 left in regulation, as Kellie Nurko (Robbinsville, N.J./Allentown) scored an unassisted goal.  The Hawks then grabbed the advantage once again when Gina Chico (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) accepted a pass from Kristen Hulmes (Montville, N.J./Montville) and shot it past Sacred Heat goalie, Robyn Breer.

Sacred Heart (7-11, 7-4 NEC), capitalizing on their seventh penalty corner of regulation, registered a goal with no time remaining in regulation to force overtime.  The Pioneer tally was credited to Andrea Marsden, as she slapped it past Monmouth gaolie, Brittany Kershaw (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea).

The two squads played an even first overtime, as ball possession took over.  The Pioneers, who managed only one shot in the second overtime, scored on the play as Enderly scored on an Athans’ pass with 5:38 remaining in the game.

Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday, as they take on Drexel University in their regular season finale.  The match, set for 1:30 p.m., will be played at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
