MONMOUTH FIELD HOCKEY DROPS MATCH TO FAIRFIELD

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth’s seniors played their last regular-season home game Wednesday afternoon at the Hawks dropped a 4-1 decision to Fairfield at the MU Field Hockey Park.

Monmouth (9-8, 8-1 Northeast Conference) recognized its 10 seniors who all began their careers as freshmen on the Hawks’ first-ever field hockey squad in 1997.

After the festivities, Fairfield (11-5, 4-1 Patriot League) took control of the game early on as Emilie Hughenholtz rifled a shot towards the cage which Carrie Flammia redirected into the goal to give the Stags a 1-0 edge with 17:45 left in the first half. Fairfield remained on the attack most of the first half, outshooting the Hawks 11-2 but the score remained the same heading into the intermission.

The Stags gained the second-half momentum with a pair of goals in just over a minute as Dani Brown scored an unassisted goal with 30:42 left in the game and 1:04 later Izabella Kotowski scored on an assist from Hugenholtz to give the Stags a 3-0 lead. Kotowski added an unassisted goal with 23:25 remaining in the game to cap Fairfield’s scoring for the afternoon.

Kellie Nurko scored Monmouth’s lone goal with 21:39 left to trim the Stags’ lead to 4-1.

Monmouth continues its season on Sunday as it travels to Albany, N.Y., for a 1 p.m. contest vs. Siena.
