HAWKS REBOUND WITH OVERTIME VICTORY AT UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – Kelly Monahan's goal just 1:35 into the first overtime propeled Monmouth University to a 2-1 win over UMBC in Northeast Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Stadium in Baltimore, Md.

The Retrievers took the early lead in the second half as freshman forward Cecille Banas blasted a shot past Hawk goalie Lauren Strina at 20:22.  Banas received a pass from sophomore forward Caitlin Galligan on the penalty corner.

Monmouth (7-5, 6-3 NEC) had several opportunities to even the score, including having a player advantage for five minutes after UMBC sophomore Alycia Downs was given a yellow card.

With 0:06 remaining on the clock, Monmouth was awarded a penalty corner.  UMBC (2-9, 2-7 NEC) was whistled for another violation, this time with 0:00 showing on the clock.  On the ensuing penalty corner play, Hawks' junior Megan Kenney found teammate Kristen Haberthur directly in front of the net for the tying score.

In overtime, Monmouth maintained the momentum and notched the game-winning tally just 1:35 into the extra period.  Monahan rebounded a missed shot and put it past UMBC netminder Karalyn Krieger for the win.

Monmouth continues its road trip with a match in Loretto, Pa., against St. Francis on Sunday at 12 p.m.
