Majors and Careers
We believe that everyone can benefit from “career work,” whether it involves help in choosing a major, access to career interest resources, internship opportunities, or a workshop on resume writing. The First Year Advising Office and the Center for Student Success offer students a great deal of support with major and career choices. Students can assess their career interests in a variety of ways, and we strongly encourage all students to begin this exploration as early as possible. Students are encouraged to follow the Student Career Planning Guide, which outlines career planning steps during first, sophomore, junior, and senior years.
Some students have chosen a major when they arrive at college. For many others, the first year can be a time to explore majors and careers. If you are not sure of your major, you have plenty of time to decide, but we recommend that you plan carefully for the different majors you are considering. The best bet is to let your Advisor know which major(s) you are considering. He or she can help you select courses that would work in any of those majors while offering you a sampling of what the major would be like.
NOTE: Students who are planning to study art, biology, chemistry, computer science, criminal justice/forensics, education, math, medical technology, or software engineering are encouraged to declare a major as early as possible since these are highly structured majors.
SOAR to 2016 provides help with selecting your major and will be available mid-May 2012.
