Academic Bumps Along the Way
If I find myself in academic difficulty, what should I do?
You should see your First Year Faculty Advisor or someone in the First Year Advising office who can provide a variety of referrals, depending on your needs. For academic issues, the advisor may provide a referral for tutoring in one of the learning centers. Other tutoring is available within academic departments. We encourage students to take responsibility for self-referrals whenever possible. If personal problems are interfering with academic performance, as they often do, confidential personal counseling is available through the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services.
What is MEWS?
MEWS stands for Monmouth’s Early Warning System, which is designed to help all first-year students and undeclared students succeed by informing advisors of any difficulties they may be experiencing, such as absences, poor performance, or needing extra help. Please respond immediately to any calls and e-mails from your First Year Faculty Advisor regarding a MEWS concern. MEWS received national attention when it was cited as an outstanding feature of our retention program.
How will I get my midterm and final grades?
You will receive information from the Office of Registration and Records about accessing your grades and other information via WEBstudent. It is strongly recommended that you visit your First Year Faculty Advisor to review your midterm grades.
What is FERPA? Will my parents receive copies of my grades?
Parents do not automatically receive copies of midterm and final grades because of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). If you wish to have your parents or guardian receive grades or other forms of information, you must complete a FERPA form on e-Forms to release this information. This waiver will be in effect for one academic year and must be renewed at the beginning of each fall semester. Only those records indicated on the waiver form will be released. In addition, you may change the form at any time.
What is First Year Seminar (FY101)? How will it help me?
First Year Seminar is a three-credit course sponsored by The Office of Academic Foundations-General Education. Its purpose is to aid you in your adjustment to Monmouth and to campus life in general. It will focus on academic, personal, and career issues that all first-year students face, and orient you to the many available resources and support systems.
Are tutoring services available?
The first year is an important transition period. Monmouth University and the Center for Student Success are committed to assist all first-year students with their adjustment to the rigors of university academics. Whether you are seeking assistance in writing a paper, studying for an exam, or general help with an academic course, one of the professional centers will welcome you. Assistance is available through the Math Learning Center, Writing Center, and Tutoring Center. Students may be referred by their professors, First Year Faculty Advisors, or they may attend voluntarily.
What services are available for students with disabilities?
All identified students with disabilities who have furnished appropriate documentation may be eligible for reasonable accommodations as specified by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Department of Disability Services provides assistance for students.
