Monmouth University Professor Awarded Grant from National Academic Advising Association

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) honored Dr. Janice Stapley, Monmouth University associate professor of psychology, at its annual conference held in Minneapolis, M.N., in October. Stapley was recognized for receiving the competitive peer-reviewed grant for her study, “An Examination of Academic Advice Seeking within an Emerging Adulthood Framework.” NACADA awarded four grants this year.

Dr. Stapley, director of Monmouth University’s Social Development Laboratory, conducted the study which examines the needs of special populations and the general population of undergraduates through a developmental lens.

Stapley and her colleagues have published previously in both the NACADA Journal and Academic Advising Today. Stapley’s article, “Academic Advising: The Key to Increasing Retention Among Students with Anxiety Disorders,” co-authored by Kerstin Bothner ’13, was published in Academic Advising Today in December, and the article, “The Demise of In-Person Academic Advising is Nowhere in Sight!,” co-authored by Jennifer Noonan ’10, will be published in March. Both co-authors are Monmouth University Department of Psychology alumni who were research assistants in Stapley’s laboratory as undergraduates.

“Congratulations to Dr. Stapley on receiving a NACADA grant,” said Gary Lewandowski, chair of the Department of Psychology. “In a department of stellar academic advisors and mentors, Dr. Stapley has taken a leadership role in the scholarship of advising, and has done outstanding work continuing our department’s tradition of fostering faculty-student collaborations.”

NACADA is an international, educational association of individuals engaged in academic advising and committed to enhancing the educational development of students. Its more than 10,000 members include professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators and students.
