GEN SILENT FILM SCREENING AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY

Critically-acclaimed filmmaker Stu Maddux will bring his film Gen Silent to Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre on September 19 at 7:30 p.m. The film is free and open to the public and there will be a Q & A with the filmmaker following the screening.

Gen Silent asks six seniors if they will hide their friends, their spouses, their entire lives in order to survive discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people in the health and nursing care system. Their surprising decisions are captured through intimate access to the lives of people who fought the earliest battles for equality only to be confronted once again by bigotry and intolerance.

Stu Maddux is a freelance producer, director, writer, and editor with national credits who has become a multi-award winning documentary filmmaker. His films include the critically-acclaimed Bob and Jack’s 52-Year Adventure about an Army sergeant who began an affair with his commanding officer in 1952. The two men came out to the troops in their unit and are still together a half-century later. It was through his long hours spent with Bob Claunch and Jack Reavley that Maddux became keenly interested in the struggles of older lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender individuals.

The event is sponsored by Monmouth University’s Department of Communication and the Center for the Arts, and part of the “On Screen: In Person” film series, which brings six films and filmmakers to Monmouth University as part of a tour of the Eastern seaboard. On Screen: In Person is made possible in part through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.
