MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR OBAIDAT WINS PRESTIGIOUS SCS PRESIDENTIAL AWARD

Monmouth University is very pleased to announce that Dr. Mohammad S. Obaidat, professor of computer science and software engineering, has been awarded the Society for Modeling and Simulation International’s (SCS) prestigious Presidential Service Award.

The Board of Directors of SCS approved this award in its meeting on Sunday, March 25, 2012.

The Chair of the SCS Awards and Recognition Committee Tuncer I. Ören stated in his letter to Professor Obaidat: “Your worldwide distinguished, outstanding, and dedicated technical contributions and services to the modeling and computer simulation discipline and to the Society for Modeling and Simulation International, SCS, that span over two decades are highly appreciated and well recognized by your peers, SCS, and professionals. Your worldwide outstanding technical contributions and leadership services have influenced the future of SCS and the modeling and computer simulation discipline and profession.”

The SCS Presidential Award for Service to the Society and Profession recognizes unique, long-term technical contributions and services to the profession and society. The candidate will typically have made a series of outstanding contributions over a ten to fifteen year period and exhibited technical leadership ability that has clearly resulted in a growth in the vitality of the profession and society. The candidate's decisions while in positions of responsibility have influenced the future of SCS. In addition to his/her demonstrated leadership ability, the candidate will typically have an acknowledged stature for technical achievement.

In its nomination statement, the ARC committee stated that Professor Obaidat served with distinction as the elected SCS President in the period 2009 to 2011 and has done an outstanding job as reflected by his administration’s many achievements in all lines of business: conferences, publications, membership, education, etc.  Of course, his abundant technical contributions to modeling and simulation, especially modeling and simulation of computer systems and networks, are highly recognized worldwide as evident by his more than ten published books, over 500 refereed scholarly journal and conference publications, and numerous citations to his publications by the worldwide scientific community.

Professor Obaidat commented on the announcement of the award saying, “I am very honored to be one of seven worldwide scientists who won this award since the inception of the Society of Modeling and Simulation International, SCS, in 1952. This award is not only for me, it is to my students, fellow researchers, colleagues, my family, and the institutions that I went to and the ones that I worked for including Monmouth University.”

Professor Obaidat is an internationally known academic, researcher, and scientist. He received his PhD and MS degrees in computer engineering with a minor in computer science from The Ohio State University. An accomplished author and writer, he has been an editor for numerous scientific journals including being the editor-in-chief of three scholarly international journals: the International Journal of Communication Systems, Journal of Convergence, and Journal of Information Processing. He also served as an editor of IEEE Wireless Communications and is currently serving as editor or advisory editor for many other journals including IEEE Transactions on SMC, IEEE Systems Journal, Security and Communication Networks Journal, Journal of Networks, Journal of Communications, Computer Communications Journal, and JDMS, among many other scholarly journals and transactions.

He is the author of more than ten books and over 500 refereed scholarly journal and conference publications. His books have been translated into several languages and have been used as textbooks and references worldwide. He has received numerous awards including the SCS most prestigious McLeod Founder’s Award for his outstanding technical contribution to modeling and computer simulation; the IEEE AICCSA 2009 Best Paper Award; the IEEE GLOBECOM 2009 Best Paper Award; the prestigious IEEE Communication Society’s Outstanding Leadership Award for his distinguished contribution and leadership to the 2010 IEEE GLOBECOM-Communication Software, Services, and Multimedia Applications (CSSMA 2010) Symposium; the IEEE DCNET 2011 Best Paper Award; the Nokia Research Fellowship Award; and the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award. He has chaired numerous international conferences and given numerous keynote speeches worldwide. He has served as an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished lecturer/visitor, and currently he is a distinguished lecturer for the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the SCS. Dr. Obaidat is a fellow of the SCS and a fellow of the IEEE.
