TOURETTE SYNDROME WORKSHOP AT MONMOUTH U ON OCTOBER 30

The Monmouth University School of Social Work Professional Education Program and the Monmouth University Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies Center for Professional Development in Nursing will present a Tourette Syndrome Workshop for healthcare providers, on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Club Dining Room of Magill Commons. This course will provide six contact hours for nurses and 6 CEU’s for Social Workers and is co-sponsored with the School of Social Work/PEP.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder that is characterized by repeated involuntary movements and sounds called tics. This workshop will address the characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of this disorder that is often unidentified, misdiagnosed, and misunderstood. Tourette Syndrome is often accompanied by other disorders such as OCD, ADHD, anxiety disorders, and Asperger’s Syndrome.

This workshop will analyze the intersection of TS and its associated disorders and explore treatment approaches that can be used by social workers, nurses and school staff to effectively manage anxiety in these children. Learning will focus on diagnosis, developmental course, medication management and intervention, and treatment approaches specifically used in controlling tics including cognitive behavioral therapy and habit reversal. Special attention will be paid to best practices in working with children and families.

Dr. Richard Zakreski will lead the workshop. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical child psychology from the University of Virginia in 1982. He maintains an independent practice, specializing in the treatment of children, adolescents and college-age adults, in Shrewsbury and Freehold, NJ. Dr. Zakreski specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental and neurochemical disorders, including ADHD, TS, Anxiety/OCD, and Asperger’s Syndrome.
