MU SCHOOL OF NURSING & HEALTH STUDIES PRESENT PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT IN PRIMARY CARE

Monmouth University’s, Marjorie K. Unterberg School of  Nursing and Health Studies, Center for Professional Development in Nursing and Health, will present a program on Psychiatric Assessment in Primary Care on Thursday, November 29 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Club Dining Room of Magill Commons.  This program will provide three contact hours for nurses.

Primary health care practitioners are often the first to observe and identify mental health issues. The practitioner’s ability to integrate and facilitate behavioral health is crucial as there is growing evidence that this care will improve outcomes.  This class has been developed in response to numerous requests for continuing education on this topic and will provide the non-mental health clinician an overview of psychiatric assessment techniques and screening tools.

Topics will include: Guidelines for performing a mental status exam; an overview of the diagnostic criteria for the most commonly seen mental health disorders; screening tools for depression, major thought disorders, and, addictions; basic guidelines for treating depression, insomnia, and anxiety; and  recommendations on when to refer to a mental health practitioner.

Presenter: Laura Kelly, Ph.D., APN, BC – Associate Professor, Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies. Dr. Kelly has extensive experience in Adult and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and has practiced in a variety of culturally diverse settings.
