BROWN UNIVERSITY“BACK TO CLASS” EVENT AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY

Monmouth University is pleased to host Brown University’s “Back to Class” event on March 25.  Brown University alum Marie Myung-OK Lee ’86, visiting lecturer in the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, will give a presentation titled “Behind the Scenes in North Korea: The Most Secretive Place on Earth” in the Magill Commons Club Dining Room at Monmouth University from 2 to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be provided.  Space is limited and reservations are required by contacting Glenn Cashion at gcashion@comcast.net.

North Korea has been called variously, “the most secretive place on earth” and “the most dangerous place on earth.” Much of the country remains a mystery. North Korea does not have diplomatic relations with the U.S. (and it is still technically at war with South Korea), and it is almost impossible for Americans to go there. Marie Myung-Ok Lee was working on her novel-in-progress, which was partly set in North Korea and expected she’d have to rely on primary research and satellite photos for her details. But when she was suddenly presented with an opportunity to travel with a Brown University group, she jumped at the chance and managed to take her mother along on the trip as well.  She will describe her extraordinary experience and display photographs from her trip to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The Brown University “Back to Class” event is sponsored by the Office of Global Initiatives at Monmouth University and the Brown Club of Central New Jersey.
