Monmouth University will host the 51st Annual Monmouth Junior Science Symposium (MJSS) on March 21 and 22. The two-day symposium includes presentations of student research papers and two guest speakers. The Monmouth Junior Science Symposium is co-sponsored by Monmouth University, Naval Weapons Station Earle, NAVAIR, and Picatinny Arsenal.
The primary goal of the Monmouth Junior Science Symposium (MJSS) is to promote research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics at the high school level, and to publicly recognize students for outstanding achievement. The two-day event includes presentations from New Jersey high school students on their individual science research projects. Schools are welcome to register and attend as observers.
This year's guest speakers include:
· Michael T. Menzel, JWST Mission Systems Engineer, NASA, who will speak on The Science and Mission of the James Webb Space Telescope, Thursday at 11:45 a.m.
· Gregory Matloff, Professor Emeritus, Department of Physics, New York City College of Technology (CUNY), who will speak on Protecting the Earth from Asteroid Impacts, Friday at 11:35 a.m.
The Monmouth Junior Science Symposium (MJSS) is one of 48 regional symposia held nationwide and coordinated by the Junior Science & Humanities Symposia (JSHS) division of the Academy of Applied Science, NH. MJSS is funded by Monmouth University, the United States Departments of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The MJSS audience will be comprised of approximately 350 academically talented and scientifically inclined high school students and dedicated high school science teachers representing schools from New Jersey.
The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is a highly accomplished national program that sets a standard for academic excellence. It connects researchers and educators located in university settings, government laboratories and private research centers with talented and motivated high school students and their teachers. Every year, more than 10,000 students participate in the forth-eight Regional Symposiums held on university campuses across the country including Alaska, and the Department of Defense, schools in Europe and the Pacific. Participating in the JSHS program offers students and their teachers many benefits.
Over $340,000 in scholarships and cash awards are presented to regional and national winners each year making the program an attractive opportunity for motivated students who want to pursue higher education in the areas of science, engineering, and mathematics. The top five MJSS student paper presenters will travel to Dayton, Ohio (May 1 to 5, 2013) to participate in the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) to compete for scholarships.
