The Monmouth Area Vegetarian Society (MAVS)
Offered through Monmouth University’s Center for Human and Community Wellness, Monmouth Area Vegetarian Society (MAVS) is a non-profit, non-sectarian educational organization that strives to provide:
- educational resources for informing the public about the advantages of a vegetarian diet;
- nutritional information, including recipes, that will support and facilitate the adoption and healthful enjoyment of a vegetarian diet;
- insight into the impact of animal-centered diets on human health, on the integrity of our environment, on world hunger, and on cruelty needlessly inflicted on billions of living, feeling, creatures every year;
- an opportunity for interested not-yet-vegetarians to learn first-hand about the delights of good vegetarian cooking and to get to know and interact with experienced vegetarians; and
- an opportunity for enriched understanding, mutual support, and shared fellowship for practicing vegetarians by providing opportunities for community outreach and community service in the interest of good health, environmental protection, and compassionate living.
MAVS meets on the third Sunday of most months. Meetings offer a SHARE-A-DISH DINNER of completely vegetarian foods (a vegan potluck dinner) followed by a lecture, workshop, or forum related to our educational mission.
Our programs feature distinguished nutrition experts, health-care professionals, creative vegetarian cooks, discussion forums on ethical issues, book reviews, and films.
MAVS welcomes all Vegetarians to membership—as well as those who, while not yet vegetarians, are interested in learning about Vegetarianism by sharing in the group's activities and in supporting the objectives and philosophy of the Society.
Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian, do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.

What should I bring to the vegan potluck?
You will need to bring the following:
- A vegan dish to share and the appropriate serving utensils. Bring a quantity that would feed two individuals a generous dinner – this quantity will allow multiple people to sample your dish.
- A recipe of the dish you bring on a 3x5 card (or similar). Please highlight any common allergens such as peanut, tree nut (walnut, cashew, etc.), soy, and wheat.
- Your own plate, bowl, cup/glass, paper towels, and utensils
