Glossary of Terms
If you are not familiar with colleges and universities, the language used on campus can be a little confusing. Following are definitions of some common terms for you to become familiar with:
- Admission - determines who can enroll in classes
- Bursar - reconciles all student bills
- Cashier - where a student goes to make a payment
- Chair - head of a department, such as Psychology
- Commencement - graduation day
- Dean - head of a school, such as Science or Social Work
- Financial Aid - delivers awards that reduce the cost of attending
- Provost - oversees all academic affairs
- Registrar - ensures the accuracy of student grades and program completion
- Residential Life - monitors student housing
- School - is comprised of many departments
