Peter Reinhart Named First Endowed Chair in Real Estate Policy

Two Monmouth University faculty members have been named to endowed chairs, one in real estate policy and the other in philosophy and corporate policy, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Laura J. Moriarty announced on June 25.

Peter Reinhart, Esq., who also serves as the director of the Kislak Real Estate Institute, is the first recipient of the Arthur and Dorothy Greenbaum and Robert Ferguson/New Jersey REALTORS Endowed Chair in Real Estate Policy in the Leon Hess Business School. The endowed chair was named in honor of the late Robert Ferguson, who served as executive vice president of New Jersey REALTORS for nearly 40 years, and Arthur Greenbaum, senior partner at Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis, LLC, who received the first Monmouth University Kislak Real Estate Institute Leadership Excellence Award in 1994.

“New Jersey REALTORS has always had a strong interest in how our land is used for current and future generations. We are proud to help endow the Chair in Real Estate Policy to further the discussion of our state’s future land uses. Peter Reinhart is an excellent choice for this chair with his extensive background and experience in housing and other real estate policy issues,” said Jarrod Grasso, CEO of New Jersey REALTORS.

“Peter Reinhart’s cutting edge understanding of law and politics make him ideally suited to hold the endowed chair,” said Moriarty.

“I am very grateful to the University and the donors for endowing this chair,” said Reinhart. “I look forward to making Monmouth University New Jersey’s center for policy discussion on the important issues affecting the future use of our land and the associated development, environmental, social, infrastructure and fiscal impacts.”

Reinhart has held many leadership roles in a diverse set of issues relevant to the quality of life in New Jersey. He is the chairman of the board of New Jersey Future, the leading land use policy organization in the state, vice chairperson of the board of trustees of Meridian Health Corporation, past chairman of the Jersey Shore Partnership, and past president of the New Jersey Builders Association.  Reinhart was senior vice president and general counsel for Hovnanian Enterprises, Inc. for 33 years and served on the Council on Affordable Housing for 10 years. He was also a member of the Real Estate Task Force of Governor Christine Todd Whitman’s Economic Master Plan Commission. Reinhart has authored articles for Housing New Jersey, Tri-State Real Estate Journal, and New Jersey Lawyer. He received his bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College and law degree from Rutgers Camden Law School.

Guy Oakes, Ph.D. from the University’s Leon Hess Business School was reappointed Kvernland Chair in Philosophy and Corporate Social Policy, which has been endowed through generous gifts in the name of Jack T. Kvernland, a late trustee of the University.

“Dr. Oakes is a scholar of the highest order, with interests that span many disciplines and ideologies,” said Moriarty. “He has the ability to engage students and make them think critically, which prepares them for success in the business world.”

Oakes does research in the history and philosophy of the social sciences and the sociology of ethics. His articles have appeared in a variety of scholarly journals in philosophy and the social sciences, and he has published books with several university presses, including Cambridge University Press, The MIT Press, Oxford University Press, University of Illinois Press and Yale University Press. His book “The Provocative Joan Robinson: The Making of a Cambridge Economist,” co-authored by Monmouth University Professor of Economics Nahid Aslanbeigui, received the Joseph J. Spengler Best Book of 2010 award from the History of Economics Society. His new book, “Arthur Cecil Pigou,” will be published in September. He received his bachelor’s degree from University of Chicago and doctorate degree from Cornell University.
