The School of Social Work, through its concentration in International and Community Development in the MSW program, maintains several field internships in Africa. Please find information here on field sites in two African countries, Tanzania and Rwanda.
Tanzania
The United Republic of Tanzania is located in Eastern Africa and was formed out of the union of two sovereign states in 1964—Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Like many other developing countries, Tanzania is currently faced with a number of social problems, such as HIV/AIDS, that require the attention of social workers. Internship Sites: There are two internship opportunities for Monmouth students in Tanzania: one in a youth-led development agency in Iringa, and the other through a social work professional organization in Dar es Salaam.
RESTLESS DEVELOPMENT (Iringa)

Restless Development (Tanzania) is a leading global youth-led development agency with over 20 years' experience in implementing internationally recognized programs. The agency has three main goals:
- Civic Participation: To ensure that young people are significant contributors to development processes.
- Livelihoods and Employment: To help young people take up productive livelihoods and employment.
- Sexual and Reproductive Health: To promote safe sexual and reproductive practices among young people.

TASWA: TANZANIA SOCIAL WORKERS ASSOCIATION (Dar es Saalam)
TASWA is a nonprofit, nongovernmental professional association, established in 1980 and officially registered in 1982. It is the only association that unites and supports social workers throughout Tanzania, as they serve, advocate for, and defend various communities. Its mission is to enhance the welfare of the Tanzanian people through advocacy; quality service provision; and promoting human rights, social justice, and policies that ensure the rights of vulnerable populations—especially children, the disabled, and the elderly.

Rwanda
Anyone who decides to intern in Rwanda must know the history of the country and the history of the genocide that occurred there in 1994. You can read detailed historical information on Rwanda from the Africa Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
Internship Site: Monmouth students can intern in Kigali, Rwanda, through the Institute of Policy Analysis and Research—a nonprofit, independent think-tank in Rwanda.
IPAR: Institute OF Policy Analysis and Research
IPAR, guided by a fundamental concern for the well-being of all Rwandans, is dedicated to the promotion of three fundamental values:
- Prosperity: A Rwanda that promotes the well-being of its people to improve quality of lives and create wealth and employment opportunities.
- Opportunity: That every Rwandan should have the opportunity to succeed—their talents nurtured and their hard work rewarded.
- Inclusiveness: That all of Rwanda's people deserve the chance to share in the fruits of its growing prosperity.

Student interns at IPAR are involved in ongoing research projects, or they can develop their own research project, which IPAR would help carry out while the student is in Rwanda.
