Monmouth University is among the top ten percent of all institutions in student performance on the nationally recognized assessment measure, the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) Test. The test measures students’ learning gain from first to final year. The CLA also compares the magnitude of the learning gain to other institutions’ gains, yielding a "value-added" assessment. The learning gain between Monmouth freshmen and seniors was the highest of any participating college.
“We are thrilled that the results of this test indicate that our curriculum is helping students become critical thinkers – a skill that is important in all aspects of life,” said Provost Thomas Pearson. “Our faculty and staff work hard to create a challenging environment for learning and growth.”
The University's President Paul G. Gaffney II said, “Our students and alumni have told us they value highly the education at Monmouth University and this test provides further evidence that our program is superb. We are preparing students to be the future leaders of our region and our nation.”
The CLA, developed and administered by the Council for Aid to Education, is a holistic assessment of students’ critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem solving, and written communication skills. Other participating schools included Arizona State University, CUNY City College, Pace University, Syracuse University, Pennsylvania State University, Wagner College, and Wheaton College.
