Monmouth University offers the only comprehensive, for credit, Post Master’s Certificate program in New Jersey which provides both the academic and clinical requirements of the Association for Play Therapy (APT). As an approved APT Higher Education Provider, Monmouth University is committed to this program which works to enhance the clinical practice of helping professionals working with children and adolescents.
The Post Master’s Certificate Program in Play Therapy provides the 150 course hour requirement, in addition to the 500 experiential learning hours as outlined by the Association for Play Therapy (APT). Students enrolled in the program will take the three courses, plus two seminars that will provide the academic, clinical, and supervisory components of the Monmouth University Post Master’s Certificate. This program will fulfill the Registered Play Therapist (RPT) certification requirements, including the supervision by a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor. Students completing the certificate program will be eligible for RPT certification.
Academic Planning and the Clinical Hours
Courses maybe taken in a flexible manner and do not involve pre-requisites. Students may opt to take only one weekend course or a full Saturday and Sunday load. Before registering for the Play Therapy Seminars, it is advised that the student sit down with the Program Director. Many of our post master’s students are not in need of a clinical site and already work with children. Students may use their place of employment for their clinical hours.

Students are strongly encouraged to attend an information session provided by the program director each semester. Play therapy instructors will notify students of the upcoming dates. In these sessions, seminar planning is discussed, as well as working through the application process for the RPT. The Association for Play Therapy requires that your seminar instructor providing supervision must observe one of your clinical sessions. This process will also be discussed and reviewed for each student. Once all of the course requirements have been met, a Post Master’s Certificate will be issued to you by Monmouth University. At this time, and with the completion of the experiential learning hours, the student is ready to apply for the RPT credential with the Association for Play Therapy.
