SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) @MU
March 24th, 2012, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
SENCER will be holding their Spring Meeting at Monmouth on March 24th and you are invited to join us.
SENCER applies the science of learning to the learning of science, all to expand civic capacity. SENCER courses and programs connect science, technology, engineering, and mathematics content to critical local, national, and global challenges. Students and faculty report that the SENCER approach makes science more real, accessible, "useful" and civically important.
The plenary will be given by Dr. Tom Wood. Dr. Wood is Associate Professor of Integrative and Interdisciplinary Studies in New Century College at George Mason University, who will be talking about his efforts to science to the civic area via his "Mysteries of Migration" SENCER Model Course and his subsequent work at his "Environmental Studies on the Piedmont" research, education and conservation center. He will also join us for the panel discussion. He is currently investigating the behavioral and physiological divergent evolution of North America's native swans (Trumpeter and Tundra swans). Dr. Wood is actively involved in several federally funded science education reform efforts including SENCER. His course "Mysteries of Migration, Consequences for Conservation" is a national model course for science and civic engagement.
Dr. Terry McGuire of Rutgers will also present "Evolutionary Medicine- a 2010 SENCER Model course"
A panel discussion on informal science education is also planned.
