Master of Arts in History
If you are looking for a high standard of scholarship, a great choice of stimulating courses, and small class sizes—all within a welcoming and collegial environment—then look forward to success in Monmouth University’s Master of Arts in History program.
In addition to offering vital specializations in United States history and European history, we also offer world history. World history is a growing field of study that seeks to understand global phenomena that transcend national boundaries. World history is also increasingly challenging the place of Western civilization courses in American high schools and colleges.
Whether you are pursuing a career in teaching or jobs relating to public history, museums, archival work, or any profession that requires superior critical reading and writing skills, a master’s degree in history will enhance your résumé. The program provides advanced preparation for teachers, it prepares graduates to enter PhD programs, and it provides a foundation for the pursuit of independent research in history.
The MA in History offers a general history track, as well as the following specializations:
Each specialization is designed to enhance competence in the field, increase professionalism, and develop leadership.
Those who wish to specialize in any of the program’s areas of study and who are planning to pursue a doctoral degree at another institution may complete a master’s thesis. Graduates of the Monmouth MA in History program have gone on to PhD programs at Temple University, Drew University, Rutgers University, and more. Those with a general interest in history may pursue a broad-based program and can opt to take a comprehensive examination in place of completing a thesis. Each of these options requires the completion of 30 credits.
