RECENT WORKSHOPS
PRINCIPALS’ ACADEMY
Selecting and Retaining Teachers
On Thursday, August 18, 2011, Monmouth University’s School of Education hosted its Principals’ Academy in the Multipurpose Activity Center Varsity Room. Thirty-three principals from across the local area attended the academy which had the theme of “Selecting and Retaining Teachers.” A table topic discussion was held first which centered on two questions:
- What is the most effective question you ask during a new teacher interview?
- What qualities or attributes are you trying to get by asking that question?
Following the table topic discussion, a panel of principals talked about strategies/techniques used to hire and retain effective teachers. Included in the panel were: Dr. John Andl of New Monmouth Elementary School in Middletown; Ms. Risa Clay of Red Bank Regional High School; and Mr. Donald Colvin of Long Branch Middle School. They posed the question, “How do you know you are getting the best people available for a given position?” which opened the floor for some engaging conversation. To bring everything together at the end of the session, Mrs. Nora Pettyjohn of Beers Street School in Hazlet gave a presentation on “New Teacher Induction: A Teacher’s Perspective,” which led the group into open discussion. Overall, the Principals’ Academy was a great success in bringing together the ideas and perspectives of multiple local principals.
