Creating Centers
Across the curriculum is the innovative way that Professors Brennan and Groff present the topic of ‘Creating Centers’ to their combined classes of EDS 352 and EDL 327. Using a co-teaching model, the two instructors describe the essential elements that must be included in designing a Center using differentiation. Professor Groff reviews the key points related to literacy, and Professor Brennan reinforces the importance of adding appropriate modifications and accommodations in a Center.
The two classes are divided into nine groups; each group is comprised of two sophomores from EDL 327 and two seniors from EDS 352. The groups are assigned a grade and subject, and then using technology, they research the related standards and begin their design. Professors Brennan and Groff interact with the groups during the classroom discussions.
The groups have one week to prepare their final project. The following Friday, each group assembles their Center in an assigned area, and using a jigsaw format, they visit all the Centers and complete the activities according to the directions.
In the end, each student fills out a secret ballot voting for the most engaging, creative, and best overall Center. Prizes are awarded by Professors Brennan and Groff to the winners in each category.
Students recognize the benefits of participating in this group project. One student said, “I wish all my classes were like this. I get to learn about it and then I do it while I have someone a little older to guide me as I complete the Center to make sure that it has all the standards and appropriate modifications. This is a great way to learn.”
