Academic Program Assessment and Improvement
Monmouth University is accredited by the Middle States Association/Commission of Higher Education (MSA/CHE). Every ten years the University undergoes a comprehensive review of its regional accreditation, and at the five-year intervals it submits a Periodic Review Report that advises MSA/CHE on the University’s progress in meeting its mission and strategic plan objectives.
The Monmouth University Strategic Plan (2004-2014) not only affirms the mission and core values of the University, but also provides a plan for the ongoing review of the academic programs. The Academic Affairs division is responsible for conducting that review, and each year the division identifies goals and objectives for the coming academic year related to student learning and program assessment and improvement. These goals and objectives are shared with the faculty and academic administrators for input, and the final plan is reviewed and endorsed by the Board of Trustees at its October meeting. The current Academic Affairs mission statement as well as the goals and objectives are available for review.
In addition to maintaining MSA/CHE accreditation, Monmouth University is committed to attaining national accreditation, as appropriate, for specific degree programs, and to undertaking regular and systematic internal reviews of those programs not accredited nationally within the discipline. Central to the review process is an assessment of student learning outcomes (e.g., General Education program outcomes, what students learn in their major, the results for Monmouth University from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), an overview of alumni success, and post-graduation employment by school and program). These data form, in part, the basis for decision making with regard to programmatic improvements.
