Janette Yarwood is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the Graduate Center, CUNY. She is the current Dissertation Fellow in the Department of History and Anthropology. Her dissertation focuses on how the historically "mixed-race" population officially classified as coloured under apartheid are negotiating race, ethnicity, and class within the new social and economic conditions of post-apartheid South Africa.
Her two years of dissertation research in South Africa and writing were funded by several fellowships including the Fulbright Hays Dissertation Research Abroad Program, the National Science Foundation, a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS), David Spitz Dissertation Fellowship in the Social Sciences, and the Monmouth University Dissertation Fellowship for Faculty Diversity.
In addition to completing her dissertation, during this academic year Janette will teach Introduction to Anthropology, Race and Identity in South Africa, and Hip Hop and American Culture.
