Message from the Chair
I am delighted to join the Department of Chemistry, Medical Technology, and Physics at Monmouth. I look forward to working with our enthusiastic and well-rounded chemistry and medical technology students.
Our chemistry students have a keen interest in learning their field of study and in participating in faculty-guided research projects.
- Monmouth medical lab science and clinical lab science students benefit from a capstone, year-long placement into laboratory programs at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, or UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions.
- Many Monmouth chemistry majors benefit from our School of Science Summer Research Program and an opportunity to present their research findings at regional or national meetings of the American Chemical Society.
- The faculty members in our department are excellent classroom instructors whose efforts are supported by instructional technology in the classroom and by supplemental instruction and peer mentoring outside of the classroom.
- The Monmouth student laboratory experience includes everything from the simple development of good laboratory practices to hands-on experience with advanced instrumentation such as a Bruker AVANCE 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, a Perkin Elmer API 2000 LCMS, or an Innov-X Delta Premium XRF analyzer.
Our students’ success beyond Monmouth reflects on the quality of their Monmouth experience. Many of our graduates continue their studies in high quality professional schools or PhD science programs, while other graduates begin careers as clinical scientists, medical technologists, educators, or practicing chemists.
Two distinctive strengths of our department are the variety of career paths available to our majors and the close interactions between students who are focusing on different career paths. As a result of those strengths, our students are confident of their career choice by the time they graduate because they have been routinely exposed to a variety of career options.
Like my colleagues in the department, I am delighted to share my enthusiasm for chemistry with our Monmouth students. My enthusiasm was fueled by what I learned from several great teachers who were also fine chemists. My enthusiasm for chemistry continues because of the benefits that chemistry can bring to society, especially in the area of affordable and environmentally friendly alternative energies.
My largest personal contribution to the chemistry enterprise, however, comes from the training and education that I can provide to the next generation of chemists and other professionals. I know that Monmouth University provides me with what I need to make my contribution to the enterprise of chemistry.
